Vacancy: Community Reporter
REF Stories | Multiple locations
REF Stories is looking for curious, motivated people to find and tell hyperlocal stories from refugee camps and urban refugee communities.
You are on the ground every day. At the markets, schools, homes and streets where life happens. You find the stories that matter to people right now and bring them to life in short, visual content for social media.
This role is about people, curiosity and being close to your community.
Who we are
REF Media Foundation is a non-profit media organisation that gives voice to forcibly displaced communities, created by the community itself.
REF Stories is our mobile-first storytelling network: short, visual stories for social media, made by local storytellers with their smartphones. We show what major developments and decisions mean for the daily lives of people in refugee situations. Not as victims, but as people living their lives under extraordinary circumstances.
What you will do
You find and tell three kinds of stories:
- Hyperlocal news — what is happening right now in your community that people need to know. The price of something changes. A new service opens. Something happens in the market or the school. You are there first.
- Practical information — when rules or systems change, you help people understand what it means for their daily life. How do families adapt? What do people need to know to navigate a new procedure?
- Community and agency — you tell the stories that show your community is not just waiting for things to happen. People are building businesses, creating culture, solving problems. You give those stories a platform.
You will:
- Find untold and fast-moving local stories
- Write short, clear news items
- Record short videos and take photos with your smartphone
- Interview people from your community
- Publish content across WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook
You work closely with the Multimedia Producer and Editorial Lead.
Who you are
- Deeply curious and not afraid to approach people
- Fast, accurate and responsible with information
- Comfortable working with a smartphone
- Active on social media and understand what people engage with
- A team player who cares about your community
- Willing to learn and grow every day
What you get
- Monthly salary
- Smartphone and accessories
- Internet access and transport support
- Training and mentorship by experienced journalists / storytellers
- A professional team with clear editorial leadership
- Visibility and trust within your community
