Community Radio for & by Refugees

Growing a network of radio stations to help refugees speak out and become more self-reliant

Nieuwe alinea

Worldwide the number of refugees tends to grow. But donor money per refugee tends to shrink. Refugees are more and more required to become self-reliant: from inactive and aid-depended helpless ‘outcasts’ who beg for support, to active  participants in host societies.

Community-based radio run by and for refugees could play a role in this transformation. Radio programs produced by fellow refugees could inspire and empower the refugees so that they might become more (economically) active and more adaptive to their (new) circumstances.

We  therefore plan to help establish a network of community based radio stations run by and for refugees. We will pilot our radio in the third world (where most of the refugees come from, and often remain contained in refugee camps), in Kenya. As well as in the West (where many of the refugees long to go to, but where many of them have serious difficulties to integrate and to become active vibrant participants of society), in te Netherlands.

We hope to foster a growing network of radio stations run by and for refugees. A network in which the stations will communicate with each other, learn from each other, share programs, journalists and reactions from listeners with each other, and inspire each other.

Radio for and by refugees, to help them become active participants in society. For the betterment of the refugees and their host communities.
