KAKUMA, NOVEMBER 2025.
We just returned from an incredible week at REF FM KK in Kenya, and the energy is still buzzing. Our goal was to capture the impact of REF FM through a new film. But we didn’t want to tell the story ourselves. In the spirit of “by refugees, for refugees,” we teamed up with 11 talented young filmmakers living in the Kakuma and Kalobeyei camps.
These creators, from all over Africa, brought both expertise and a deep understanding of life in the camps. Together, we spent the first two days developing the script, having honest conversations about the real challenges people face and how community radio bridges solutions and hope.
The magic really happened when the cameras started rolling. Over the next three days, powerful storylines emerged naturally from the community. The creativity, resilience, and professionalism of this 11-person crew were simply inspiring. Despite the heat and the hardships, the energy on set was full of positivity, collaboration, and drive.
By the time we headed to the airport on Friday, we didn’t just have a film in our hands, we had a story that truly represents the community and REF FM KK.
The film is now finished and will be published on our website very soon.
Stay tuned!
